Different generations have their own stories and stereotypes. With the advent of technology, each generation also had its own unique technology. It started with trying to make work more efficient. After that, gadgets became forms of communication and continue to evolve into entertainment. Then comes the internet. It has transformed the way we live, from booming e-commerce related businesses like online retail and web design services to the social media platforms we all know and love.
Baby Boomer Technology
It was easier for the baby boomers. Gadgets were
made primarily for communication, to help with housework, and some for
entertainment. A revolutionary device during their generation was the landline
telephone, which was present in almost every home in the world at the time.
They also had stand mixers, microwaves and electric can openers. These were all
considered household treasures. There was, of course, the newly introduced
color television, which, while not yet a staple, was growing in popularity.
Generation X Gadgets
And then came Generation X. The television was now
found in many households and often served as a babysitter when both parents
were working. It even gained popularity during the 1969 moon landing, when it
inspired hundreds of American families to buy their own set. Television wasn't
the only device dominating this generation.
The introduction of the 1970s also saw the mass
marketing of cell phones and desktop computers. The first cell phone was made
by Motorola in 1973. While this made communication easier on the go, it was a
real problem. It weighed 2.5 pounds with a battery life of just half an hour
and a charge time of 10 hours (incredible compared to our fast chargers).
However, desktop computers were a different story.
Originally used as a working aid in offices, they offered the perfect model for
storing and transferring data. This was especially true with the introduction
of email in 1971 and the floppy disk and floppy disk drive in 1972. It wasn't
long before desktop computers took the world by storm, and by the 1980s almost
every school and home had one at least one. . Not only is it halfway in terms
of work and education, but it keeps things fun with early desktop games like
Space War and Pong.
Modern Millennial
The introduction of these gadgets shaped the next
generation: Generation Y. They are called digital natives and grew up in a time
of rapid change, very different from the generations before them. In the 90's
you could find technology everywhere, connecting everyone in the world.
It began in the late 1980s with the development of a
widespread digital mobile phone system in Europe and lasted until the first SMS
was sent in 1992. Bulky and slow mobile phones were no longer around. They were
replaced by devices like the Nokia 6000 in 2000. These durable rectangular
models fit comfortably in your palm, purse, or pocket and will outlast the
older Motorola model.
Some notable releases included the first camera
phone in 2002, the RAZR in 2004, and the first iPhone in 2007. The iPhone
introduced touchscreen capabilities, internet access, a virtual keyboard, and
full email access. A year later, they launched the Apple Store, which at the
time only had over 500 apps. Then came the birth of the first Android in the
form of the T-Mobile G1, which was followed by the Android Market that we all
know and love as the Google Play Store.
We know how this all happened. Other gadgets were
released by Apple and Samsung that still work well today. They all paved the
way for Gen Z gadgets and social media popularity. People could now keep in
touch through platforms like My Space, Friendster, Facebook and Twitter. The
latter two are still widespread
today.
Gadgets in everyday life
Today we hardly see anyone without a cell phone.
They have apparently become an extra part of the body at this point, and some
people cannot leave the house without them. Mobile phones are now used for
everything from communication to education. They are even a popular way to surf
the web, leading web designers to create more mobile-friendly websites that are
simple and easy to understand.
Overall, the gadgets we have today have come a long
way, evolving through different generations and serving different purposes.
Regardless of the characteristics and capabilities of the technology we use,
the primary and most important purpose is always to support human activity.
